The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has appealed to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for a bailout to offset the party’s N8.9 billion election debts. The appeal was made during the APC NEC meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, a day after the party’s national caucus meeting at the Presidential Villa.

Ganduje disclosed that the debts stemmed from legal battles filed by opposition parties challenging the election victories of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC governors, and legislators. He explained that the party’s accounts had been garnisheed, making it difficult to meet financial obligations. According to Ganduje, the debts include expenses from pre-election legal engagements, election petitions, and appeals for legislative, governorship, and presidential elections. He praised the National Legal Adviser, Prof. Abdul Kareem Kana (SAN), for his efforts in negotiating to reduce the debt burden through dialogue and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

The meeting was attended by President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and several party leaders, including former Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari and Minister of Budget and National Planning Atiku Bagudu. However, notable figures like former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and ex-governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai were absent.

Ganduje also appealed to President Tinubu to intervene in securing land from the Federal Capital Territory Administration for the construction of a new APC national secretariat, citing the current building as outdated and inadequate.

In his remarks, President Tinubu commended the APC National Working Committee for its performance and pledged to support reconciliation efforts in the party’s troubled state chapters. He urged party leaders to set up committees to address lingering crises, particularly in states like Kano, Benue, Lagos, Adamawa, and Delta, where internal conflicts are threatening the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NEC passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, recognizing his leadership and the economic reforms introduced by his administration. The motion was seconded by former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole, who praised the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The APC NEC meeting marks a critical moment for the ruling party as it seeks to consolidate its leadership and resolve internal divisions ahead of future elections.
