The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has dismissed rumors of a potential alliance with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai or associates of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 elections. Speaking during an interview on TVC’s Politics Today, Gabam emphasized the party’s independent trajectory and commitment to providing credible alternatives for Nigerians.
“There’s no alliance with anyone,” Gabam asserted. “As chairman, I have not engaged in discussions about alliances. Our focus is on reviewing strategies from 2024 and building a dynamic, inclusive platform.”
Gabam made it clear that the SDP’s priority lies in strengthening its internal structures and establishing itself as a viable choice for the electorate, distancing itself from the two dominant political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The SDP chairman expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of governance under President Bola Tinubu, highlighting issues such as the rising cost of living, food insecurity, and transportation challenges.
“The cost of living is unbearable,” Gabam remarked. “Nigerians are paying more for electricity, food, and transportation while being told the economy is improving. These contradictions are deeply concerning.”
Gabam criticized the President’s reliance on advisors, alleging that they fail to present an accurate picture of the challenges faced by everyday Nigerians. He urged leaders to remain connected to the realities on the ground.
In a striking revelation, Gabam accused the government of political intimidation, sharing that his security details were withdrawn without explanation.
“It’s alarming that state instruments are used to intimidate critics,” he said.
The chairman emphasized that the SDP remains undeterred and committed to its vision of creating a transparent and accountable platform for governance.
Clarification on Relationship with El-Rufai
Addressing speculation about his relationship with Nasir El-Rufai, Gabam acknowledged the former governor’s political influence but clarified that their connection is personal, not political.
“El-Rufai is a major force, but my relationship with him is personal, not political. Some magnify his presence to create unnecessary controversy,” he explained.
SDP’s Vision for 2027
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, Gabam reiterated SDP’s mission to empower Nigerians through a competitive, transparent platform. He criticized the weaknesses of both the PDP and APC, urging citizens to demand better governance.
“Our competition is legitimate and within the law. We aim to win by prioritizing the welfare of the people,” Gabam concluded.
The SDP has positioned itself as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape, with a commitment to addressing pressing issues and restoring public trust in governance.
