In a significant political move, Chris Okewulonu, former Chief of Staff to ex-governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State, and Chuma Nnaji, Ihedioha’s former deputy governorship candidate, have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The duo, accompanied by their supporters, announced their defection on Friday at the APC secretariat in Owerri, Imo State.

Addressing party members, Okewulonu explained that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stemmed from deep introspection and consultations.

“The qualities which formed the essence of the PDP as a political party, and which ab initio informed my attraction to it, had been continuously eroded, totally degraded, and finally and irretrievably lost,” Okewulonu stated.

He further highlighted his disillusionment with the state of opposition politics in Imo and his desire to contribute actively to improving the lives of the people.

Acknowledging Uzodimma’s Leadership

Okewulonu praised Governor Hope Uzodimma’s 3R (Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, and Recovery) administration, citing its infrastructural and human capacity development achievements.

“The humongous roads and other infrastructural interventions, and the human capacity building initiatives undertaken by the Senator Hope Uzodimma administration are eloquent testimonials to my belief and assertion,” he said.

Uzodimma Welcomes Defectors

Governor Uzodimma welcomed Okewulonu and Nnaji into the APC fold, emphasizing the significance of their decision.

“Today, the only party that means well for Imo citizens is APC,” Uzodimma declared.

He described the defections as a testament to APC’s growing influence in Imo State and likened the new entrants to elite players in sports.

“We have the Ronaldos and Lionel Messis in our party now,” Uzodimma remarked, underscoring the importance of their addition to APC.

The defection of two prominent political figures signifies a shift in Imo’s political dynamics. As Okewulonu and Nnaji join APC, the party’s stature continues to rise, solidifying its position as a dominant force in the state.

This development further reflects growing confidence in Governor Uzodimma’s leadership, setting the stage for a stronger political alignment ahead of future elections.
