Yahaya Bello, former Governor of Kogi State, granted N500 million bail by the Federal High Court, Abuja, amid N80.2 billion fraud allegations.
Yahaya Bello bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, granted bail to Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, in the sum of N500 million. This comes as he faces an 18-count charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged money laundering and misappropriation of public funds amounting to N80.2 billion.

Yahaya Bello Bail Conditions

Trial Justice Emeka Nwite outlined strict bail conditions, including:

  • Two sureties in the same amount, who must own landed properties in Abuja.
  • Submission of the title documents of the properties, verified by the court’s Deputy Chief Registrar.
  • Sworn affidavits of means by the sureties.
  • Submission of recent passport photographs by both the defendant and sureties.
  • Surrender of the defendant’s international passport, with a travel restriction outside Nigeria without court approval.

Bello is to remain in Kuje prison until his bail conditions are met.

The EFCC alleges that Bello used five proxies to acquire prime properties in highbrow areas of Abuja and Dubai, diverting public funds during his tenure as Governor of Kogi State (2016–2024).

Despite the allegations, Bello pleaded not guilty to all 18 counts, which include charges of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds.

The court has slated February 24 and 28, 2024, for the commencement of a full hearing on the case.
