The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has officially begun its pre-hearing sessions in Benin City, Edo State’s capital. Chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, the three-member panel aims to address disputes arising from the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.
During the inaugural session, Justice Kpochi emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the courtroom and called on attorneys to ensure smooth proceedings. In response, legal representatives for the petitioners and respondents pledged their commitment to professionalism throughout the tribunal process.
Representatives from security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), reassured the tribunal of robust measures in place to secure the court’s environment.
One of the petitioners, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who placed second in the election, was present at the session alongside Tony Aziegbemi, the chairman of the PDP’s state caretaker committee. However, the incumbent governor, Monday Okpebholo, was notably absent.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced the election results on September 22, declaring Monday Okpebholo victorious. The PDP candidate, Ighodalo, secured second place, while Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata finished third.
The tribunal proceedings will play a pivotal role in addressing disputes and ensuring electoral justice in Edo state.
