The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers in the six area councils to embark on an indefinite strike starting December 1, 2024 over minimum wage.
In a statement issued by Knabanyi Adalo, Chairman of the FCT NLC, the strike stems from the failure of area council chairmen to implement the ₦70,000 national minimum wage. The directive aligns with the resolutions of the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on November 8 in Port Harcourt.
Adalo cited frustration over the refusal of council chairmen to respond to the minimum wage demands and settle pending arrears, including those owed to primary school teachers.
“All workers in the six area councils in FCT are hereby directed to proceed on an indefinite strike beginning from December 1, until further directives,” Adalo declared.
Sokoto State Suspends Strike Plans
Meanwhile, the Sokoto State chapter of the NLC has suspended its planned strike following the state government’s commitment to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage in January 2025.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu announced the development while presenting the 2025 budget proposal to the state House of Assembly. Sokoto NLC Chair, Abdullahi Aliyu, expressed support for the government’s decision, stating the union would assist in the screening and verification process to ensure genuine workers benefit.
“We are optimistic that other welfare packages are coming to workers in the state,” Aliyu added, urging patience among workers.
Also the FCT strike highlights ongoing tensions between labour unions and local governments over wage implementation. Sokoto’s proactive measures, however, offer a contrasting example of negotiation and compromise.
