The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Patrice Motsepe, has vowed that appropriate action will be taken following the airport ordeal involving Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Libya. The Nigerian team and their officials were detained for several hours at the Al Abaq Airport upon arrival for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Libya. The team was denied access to basic necessities such as food, water, and internet, leading to a difficult experience.
CAF has already referred the matter to its disciplinary committee for a thorough investigation. During CAF’s 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Motsepe commented on the issue, emphasizing the need for zero tolerance towards such incidents.
Motsepe stated, “I will not comment on the Nigerian national team issue directly because there is a proper investigation, but I want to emphasize a principle: we will not tolerate such actions. This is something that has been ongoing for quite some time.”
Although he refrained from commenting directly on the Nigeria vs. Libya situation, Motsepe reassured that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is completed.
CAF’s firm stance on this matter is expected to set a precedent for better treatment of national teams during international tournaments.
