The All Progressives Congress (APC) achieved a landslide victory in the Benue State local government elections held on Saturday, sweeping all 23 chairmanship positions and securing 276 councillorship seats. The local government elections was conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC), which confirmed the results at its headquarters in Makurdi on Sunday.
In his announcement, BSIEC Chairman Mr. Richard Tombowua revealed that the APC emerged victorious against five of the eight political parties that had initially expressed interest in the election. Among the participating parties were the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Mr. Tombowua stated that the local government elections were largely peaceful, with the exception of a brief hostage situation involving a BSIEC official in Otukpo Local Government Area, which was swiftly resolved by the police. He explained that the delay in announcing the results was due to the logistical challenges of vote collation across the state.
The Labour Party Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Idoko, praised BSIEC for conducting a peaceful and credible election, while APC State Chairman Mr. Benjamin Omale commended the electoral body and thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for ensuring a level playing field for all participating parties.
The successful conclusion of the election underscores the APC’s dominance in Benue State as the party now prepares to work with its newly elected officials across all local government areas.
