Rivers Local government election

Breaking News: Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has confirmed that the October 5, 2024, local government election will proceed as planned, stating there are no legal barriers preventing the process. This announcement comes despite conflicting court rulings regarding the release of the voters’ register.

Addressing concerns after inspecting the Trans-Kalabari Road project, Governor Fubara assured citizens that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is prepared to deliver a free and fair election. He emphasized that security agencies had been mandated to support the election, expressing confidence in its smooth execution.

During his visit to RSIEC headquarters, Governor Fubara addressed reports of attempts to disrupt the commission’s work, issuing a stern warning to those involved. He assured RSIEC staff of his full backing, saying, “This is Rivers State, and I am the Governor. No one has the right to interfere in this process.”

9am News reports that while a Federal High Court in Abuja has barred INEC from releasing the 2023 voters’ register for the elections, a Port Harcourt High Court had earlier mandated the use of the same register for the polls. Despite this, RSIEC previously confirmed it obtained the voters’ register in 2023, ensuring the election moves forward.

Governor Fubara’s administration is determined to ensure that the October 5 local government election is conducted without disruption, serving the interests of the people of Rivers State.
