Breaking News: Innoson has unveiled its first locally made electric vehicle.
The vehicle designed and produced at its manufacturing plant in Anambra State.
The Company’s Head of Communications Mr. Cornel Osigwe announced this in a Facebook post saying “I just test drove the first Innoson vehicle Electric vehicle produced in Nnewi. We are just starting.”
The Innoson electric vehicle is still in the early stages of its rollout, with no available details yet on its price or market release date.
Electric vehicles have become the rave of the moment, intensely discussed and sought in the global arena. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that combustion engine vehicles contribute 15% of global carbon emissions, positioning electric vehicles as a key solution in the fight against climate change.
The demand and sales of electric vehicle has seen exponential growth globally as more research and development efforts have led to the production of electric vehicles with greater performance, longer battery life and adapted to more rugged terrains such as those found in Nigeria.
In many developing countries, including Nigeria, electric vehicle sales have been hindered by the lack of supporting infrastructure, such as charging stations, and the generally high cost of the vehicles.
However it is likely that the ever rising cost of petrol and its occasional unavailability may drive more people to turn towards procuring electric vehicles for their motoring needs.
Ogasabi reports that Stallion Motors achieved a significant milestone by assembling Nigeria’s first electric vehicle, the Hyundai Kona, in 2021.
Transitioning Into Electric Vehicle
Credible information made available to 9am News Nigeria show that The National Automotive Industry Design and Development Council (NADDC) is currently working to build 100 electric vehicle charging stations in the country in the pilot phase of a program aimed at building the necessary infrastructure to support the transitioning from combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles in Nigeria.
Nigeria is currently one of the most energy poor country in the world according the the World Economic Forum (WEF). Nigeria produces only 5000 Megawatts of electricity whereas national demand for electricity is around 40 Terawatts.
