Breaking news: Augustine Eguavoen, caretaker coach of the Super Eagles, has dismissed rumors suggesting that he has resigned after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The reports surfaced after Nigeria’s goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday, following their impressive 3-0 win over Benin. Eguavoen, upon his return to Nigeria, clarified that he is still in charge of the national team.

In an interview at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Eguavoen told 9am news Nigeria: “Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still in charge. I am the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and my responsibility is to manage the Super Eagles at this moment.”

He further explained that after the two qualifiers, he plans to discuss the team’s future strategies with the federation but has not stepped down. Eguavoen expressed concern over the spread of false reports, stressing the need for positive stories as the team prepares for their upcoming AFCON qualifying matches against Libya next month.

Eguavoen leadership currently places the Super Eagles at the top of Group D with four points from two matches. The coach remains focused on securing further victories as the qualifiers progress, with an eye on ensuring Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament.
