Court Reserves Judgment On Bayelsa, Kogi Governorship Elections

the Supreme Court has deferred its decision on the appeals from the Kogi and Bayelsa State governorship elections
Bayelsa Elections

Ogasabi on 9am News reports that the Supreme Court has deferred its decision on the appeals from the Kogi and Bayelsa State governorship elections. Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Muritala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) brought forth these appeals. Both candidates challenged the results of the 2023 governorship elections in their respective states as predicted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a decision delivered on Monday, the Supreme Court stated that it would withhold its rulings on these cases for now. 9am News Nigeria highlights that this deferral comes amid Ajaka’s appeal against a ruling that upheld Ahmed Usman Ododo’s election as Kogi State Governor. The Appeal Court previously rejected Ajaka’s plea, citing a lack of merit, but Ajaka remains determined to regain his mandate, expressing his resolve to continue pursuing justice.

Similarly, Timipre Sylva, who contested the Bayelsa State governorship elections, also saw his appeal dismissed by the Court of Appeal. The court upheld the election of Senator Douye Diri and his deputy as the lawfully elected leaders of Bayelsa State, granting Sylva and the APC a cost of N500,000.
