Ogasabi on 9am news brings you Breaking news from Abeokuta, where former President Olusegun Obasanjo has openly criticized the character of Nigeria’s current leaders. Speaking on Friday during a visit from six members of the House of Representatives, Obasanjo expressed his belief that many of those in public office should be behind bars. The lawmakers, led by former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum, Ugo Chinyere, were visiting the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library to discuss a bill advocating for a single six-year term and rotation between the North and South.
President Olusegun Obasanjo did not mince words, stating, “With all due respect, most of those in government should right now be behind bars or in gallows.” He emphasized that while Nigeria’s democratic system needs rethinking, the real issue lies in the character of those in government. Obasanjo argued that the mentality and approach of those in power are the core problems, not the duration of their terms.
Reflecting on the efforts of succeeding governments, Obasanjo lamented that they have failed to build on the foundation he laid during his presidency. He questioned whether adopting a single six-year term would make a difference if the same corrupt mindset persists. “If you give him a period of a single term of six years, he can go ahead and still do the evil he would have done in a case of two terms of four years,” Obasanjo remarked, underscoring his belief that the real change must begin with the leaders themselves.
