Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended the citizens of Lagos for their peaceful response to the nationwide protest against hunger and hardship, Ogasabi and 9am news Nigeria. In a statement issued by Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the governor expressed his admiration for the demonstrators’ efforts to maintain peace and order during the rallies.

Omotosho stated, “The Lagos State Government has closely observed today’s protest in some parts of the State and would like to acknowledge the peaceful conduct of Lagosians. This is how it should be in our dear State, as affirmed by Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We have also noted a slowdown in business activities across various sections of the state, possibly due to concerns that troublemakers and disorderly individuals might exploit the situation and disrupt our peace. Fortunately, this did not happen. Lagosians have largely chosen peaceful protests over destructive actions. The protest’s slogan, ‘hunger in the land,’ has garnered widespread attention.”

The federal government has also taken steps to address the situation, such as activating the National Grains Reserve and removing import levies on food items, which should help alleviate food scarcity and lower prices. The Lagos State Government plans to work with food wholesalers to ensure that these benefits reach citizens.

Support Measures

However, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced several measures to support residents, including the return of the popular Sunday Markets with a 25% discount on essential food items, the reinstatement of the Medical Outreach program providing free healthcare, and free delivery services for pregnant women at state hospitals. Additionally, the 25% reduction in fares on all public transportation services will continue, along with other initiatives aimed at easing the burden on Lagosians during these challenging times.

Furthermore, Omotosho emphasized that the government has heard the protesters’ voices clearly and urged that it is time for the demonstrations to come to an end. He praised the professional conduct of security agencies, including the Lagos State Police Command, the Department of State Services, the Military, Civil Defence, Neighbourhood Watch, Community leaders, Religious leaders, and Resident Associations, for ensuring that peace was maintained.

The Lagos State Government reassured residents that they can go about their daily activities without fear, as security agents will continue to safeguard the state and ensure a safe environment for businesses to operate without harassment.
